I was a little disappointed when Jack hadn’t met me at the airport, but he’d sent a car service and explained that he was finishing up some work so we could have the day together tomorrow.

It was an excellent idea and made up for the lonely car ride to the new place. As I walked into the dark apartment, I tried not to focus on its emptiness. It was already late, so Jack would be home soon.

I didn’t love plane rides, so I didn’t start to feel better until after I’d taken a shower. Wrapping a towel around myself and my hair, I stepped out of the bathroom and smiled when I saw the kitchen light was on.

“Jack! You’re home!”

“And so are you.” As he rose from the couch and rubbed his hand over his face, he gave me a weary smile. “It’s been a long couple of days without you. Did you enjoy them?”

That was a strange question.

“I enjoyed my work and spending time with Rachel. I had lunch with my parents, but I missed you.” As I stepped closer to him, I caught the first whiff of whiskey. “Your job included drinking again.”

“Another meeting at the country club. This time, the alcohol was voluntary. My meeting included Freeman, the lobbyist.”

Jack had told me about him. “You said you weren’t going to work with him.”

“I’m not yet, but it’s looking more and more unavoidable. Most everyone on Capitol Hill hates him, even Gaines, but as Edwin points out, sometimes you have to get a little dirty to do the right thing.”

I bristled at the senator’s name.

“So, you’ve spoken to Senator Gaines. Have you decided whether you’re going to work with him or not?”

My stomach twisted as I anticipated his response, and when he shrugged, I nearly moaned. “He’s going to support me anyway, and he’s a different man than when he slept…when he made the mistake.”

It affected him. He couldn’t even get the words out.

Compassion filled me. “Have you talked to your parents about this?”

“It’s my decision, and it doesn’t affect them.” Smiling, he walked toward me and rested his hands on my hips. “I don’t want to talk about work. I just want to go to bed with my wife.”

“It’s late, Jack, and as you’ve said, it’s been a long couple of days. Let’s get some sleep. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

The smile slipped from his face as his hands dropped. “Right. Tomorrow should be fun. I’ve got a meeting I need to take, but it will probably be over before you even wake up, and then I’ll be yours all day. Go ahead and go to bed. I’m going to take a shower, although now I’m wishing I’d joined you in yours.”

Swallowing hard, I nodded. He had a meeting scheduled for tomorrow. I tried not to let it bother me as I slipped into bed. Instead, I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep when he finished his shower and slipped in behind me. As usual, his
